Alan Scherstuhl included Kevin Sun's quartet residency at SEEDS in the NYTimes ongoing "What to Do in New York City" (April 2023) series. Full preview below: What to Do in New York City in April
New York Times, April 27, 2023 JAZZ Kevin Sun Quartet April 27-29 at 7:30 and 9 p.m. at SEEDS Brooklyn, 617 Vanderbilt Avenue, Brooklyn; seedsbrooklyn.org. The saxophonist and composer Kevin Sun specializes in twisty, inviting small-group post-bop that honors jazz’s past while forever plunging into the unexpected. He plays with such communicative power that listeners tend to feel they’re making discoveries right along with the band. Besides mischievous originals like “Kierkegaardashian,” Sun’s groups, during recent shows at the Jazz Gallery and Brooklyn’s Lowlands, have found fresh angles on elliptical Wayne Shorter classics, sacred music from the 15th-century Italian composer Matteo da Perugia, and the video-game soundtracks of Koji Kondo, whose “Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” theme becomes, in Sun’s hands, a spiritual-jazz wonder. Sun binds that eclecticism into a singular vision. It’s ambitious, too: His fifth self-released album will be a two-parter (the first half, “From All This Stillness,” is due out on July 7), with compositions of rich rhythmic and harmonic invention. The quartet this weekend includes Christian Li on piano, Walter Stinson on bass and Kayvon Gordon on drums. Tickets are $20 and must be purchased at the door. ALAN SCHERSTUHL
