Beyond the metal buildings, crowded subways and concrete mazes of city living, there is the neon glow of the optimistic artist. PLAiDE exists within that glow. Sun Yoo has composed something uncategorizable with his latest album: a hybrid of jazz, hip-hop, rock, and textures that refuse to be pinned down. This is music that speaks with a mix of deeply urban temperament, the promise of something new, and the soulfulness of an individual who courageously pursues his dreams.
In each composition, Sun effortlessly melds uneven rhythms and jagged intervals into singable melodies that are both catchy and interesting. Additionally, Sun's virtuosity on both the Aerophone and alto saxophone is showcased throughout with a balance that feels both sincere and impressive without being self-indulgent. His playing, along with the other members of his band, remain ever in service of the music's emotional core.
As a colleague of Sun's from our college years, I distinctly remember him spending countless hours in practice rooms, refining and developing his craft with a discipline that was almost monastic. It wasn't until we became close friends years later that he explained to me: in his mind, he was always playing catch-up in the practice room, having started this path later than most of his peers.That revelation only deepened my respect for what he's accomplished. Sun has become a personal inspiration to me, living proof that it remains possible, even against the odds of NYC’s unforgiving freelance lifestyle, to succeed and thrive through focus, determination, and an unwavering commitment to doing what you love. PLAiDE feels like a culmination of that work, a metamorphosis years in the making.
