Liner notes by the band
Nonsense
Four years ago, I spent a couple of weeks in the mountains of Banff, Alberta, surrounded by wondrous natural scenery and a community of creative musicians. I sketched out this miniature during an evening spent alone in a cabin and unearthed it for this special occasion. — KS
Happy
My most intuitive composition: it’s all about that euphoric feeling of intense joy that cannot be contained and pops out of us physically. It's heavily influenced the speech-like melodies and contrapuntal lines in Ornette Coleman's compositions. — DH
School Days
"School's Out," a painting by Boston-based African-American artist Allan Rohan Crite, served as a source of inspiration for the piece, composed in the spring of 2016. Crite’s use of color and the sense of movement in that work helped determine the structure and the use of certain musical material, in addition to my own experience as a student. — SW
Boardroom
Composed during a lengthy presentation given by suits about quarterly earnings, annual expense summaries, and projected revenue streams, and intended to imagine an alternate storyline for a board meeting that goes off the rails. — KS
The Holy Quiet
In mid-June, 2015, I was participating in a weeklong composition residency at Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, just north of Chicago, when I heard the terrible news about Charleston, South Carolina. — KS
The Golden Girder Strikes Again
The Golden Girder is a supervillain whose body has been replaced by a mass of gold-plated support beams. Despite his slow gait and soft exterior, the Girder is a force to be reckoned with, ploughing down all who stand in his way. His theme song, a simple two-part melody propelled by an unwavering rock beat, captures the Girder's brutish elegance. — TP
Malingerer
To malinger is to pretend to be sick so as to get out of fulfilling responsibilities; a malingerer is one who malingers. — KS
Clock Gears
Here I try to describe a picture of a clock's gear mechanism. Working on this conceptual piece quickly raised connotations of time and its meanings. I started writing the music only after I had a complete storyline of its progression. — DH
Anthem
An old notebook of mine contains this scrawled directive: “Write anthemic, two-horn song,” so, herewith. — KS
Colonel
The Yorkshire Terrier was bred in the 19th century to deal with pesky rats in clothing mills. This composition is dedicated to my family’s Yorkie, Colonel, who does not catch rats but does abound with rat-catching vivacity. — KS
Six Nine
This started with a groove and took on an emotional complexity as it grew into itself, embodying struggle, pathos, and even deliverance. — DH
