Liner notes

In his Illustrated Notebooks, Georges Braque writes, “One must not imitate what one wants to create.” This is wisdom that the members of Family Plan deeply understand. The music on this album has roots and has been informed by its predecessors, yet these young musicians speak with fresh voices individually and with great collective originality. They are reacting, embracing, and re-imagining the sources that their work springs from. They know where they come from and they also know who they are.

From the first moments of the opening track, “Celebratory,” it is clear that Family Plan is a collective. Andrew, Simón and Vicente speak as one organism. They are intertwined in their musical explorations, complementing each other, interacting with great cohesiveness. Yet they can also speak with diversity, provocation, and instigation, creating a counterpoint of perspectives and intentions. They often challenge any preconceived ideas about where the music will or should go next. This is music with a sense of danger and discovery that, on one hand, immaculately balances following through on expectations, while on the other hand creating surprise and unpredictability. It draws us in, and the listener who submits to the winding and intriguing path of their expression is richly rewarded.

In addition to their considerable instrumental abilities, each member has a strong complimentary compositional voice, from Andrew’s wistful optimism to Simón’s transparent earthiness to Vicente’s playful restlessness. Andrew Boudreau, Simón Willson and Vicente Hansen are creators of the highest order, and they are members of their generation that will forge directions in improvised music for years to come.
