Musica Jazz reviewed The Depths of Memory for their December 2023 issue. Full text and rough translation below:
The Depths of Memory
Musica Jazz, December 2023

--Bazzurro

An ambitious and ponderous work (despite its duration slightly exceeding the maximum capacity of the single CD), the latter (the fifth, as far as we know) by the young New York tenor saxophonist Kevin Sun, a work divided into three suites for nineteen overall movements. The texture, the rigor, the solidity of the whole make it clear what a skilled architectural hand belongs to Sun (of clear Chinese origins), capable of leading a variable group (quartets or quintets, where the trumpet is added) but always very homogeneous , impeccable in proceeding as an absolutely compact, cohesive entity, in the name of a chorality which is the distinctive sign of the proposal in question (as indeed with much of the best jazz of recent years, but perhaps of all time, without prejudice to the fortunately there are rare exceptions), a music that does not climb along particularly daring paths, but never for this reason appears obvious or derivative. A music that certainly takes into account a vast past, but filters it through an absolutely contemporary sensitivity, in the sound of the individuals as well as in what the group expresses as a whole. Quality music, at times even reassuring, but in the best sense of the term, without too many Linus blankets to wave.
